Executing a Multi-Pronged Approach to Building Decarbonization
The design, construction and operation of buildings account for roughly 40 percent of global energy-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Energy codes have been an effective strategy in reducing operational energy, but additional activities to address how design strategies and material choices influence the GHG emission impacts of buildings are needed. Reducing those emissions to meet community and industry climate goals will require a comprehensive approach that addresses all stages of the building lifecycle. This session will address current and developing solutions from individual building products and material characteristics to how those materials are incorporated into design and construction processes, how buildings are operated, and finally their deconstruction and re-use. Panelists will explore the complex alignment of multiple actors across the building and construction industry to achieve decarbonization and resilient outcomes of our existing and future building stock.
This session will explore current resilience and decarbonization strategies, including the use of environmental product declarations (EPDs), building energy and green codes, innovative approaches to conventional construction methods, federal funding opportunities and guidance, and future activities that can lead to a sustainable built environment.
