How Can Generative AI (GenAI) Accelerate BIM at Federal Agencies and Private Enterprises

The incorporation of Generative AI (GenAI) into building information management (BIM) processes and practices represents a significant opportunity for the architecture, engineering, construction, and operation (AECO) sector.

This session outlines the practical applications of GenAI in BIM, demonstrating its transformative potential across various stages of building design, construction, and operations. Federal agencies like the GSA's Public Buildings Service, along with numerous private sector firms and organizations in the real estate industry, stand to significantly benefit from efficiencies and transformative impacts offered by Generative AI.

GenAI focuses on generating new data, designs, and predictive models from existing datasets. Unlike traditional AI, which primarily analyzes and interprets data, GenAI actively creates novel outputs, making it particularly suited for the dynamic and complex needs of the AEC industry. In the context of BIM, GenAI can automate and optimize tasks, from initial design conceptualization to the operational lifecycle of buildings, thus enhancing decision-making and reducing manual labor.

This session will conclude with a summary of how advances in machine learning algorithms and computational power are expected to further refine GenAI's predictive modeling, design generation, and automation capabilities.

Learning objectives:

  • Understand the fundamentals and history of GenAI
  • Learn how GenAI is being used at federal agencies, their architects, and contractors
  • Identify the benefits of GenAI to achieve sustainability, resilience, health, safety goals
  • Explore practical applications and case studies in order to learn what to “do on Monday” upon return to the office. Accelerate AI adoption on specific projects with a GenAI Execution Plan
